Apps that stream music can also use quite a bit of data, but streaming music uses a lot less data than video. On my iPhone, I only stream video once in a while when I’m using mobile data, but I don’t worry as much about streaming music from Pandora or Spotify. Open LocalCache and enter the Spotify folder. Delete all files and folders found in the Data folder. Clear Spotify Cache on iPhone. In order to clear the Spotify cache, you will need to visit your phone’s Settings and tap General. Tap iPhone Storage, and locate ‘Spotify.‘ Tap it and select ‘Offload App.’.
On iPhone, Spotify saves downloaded music in an encrypted form on your device’s storage. If you need more room for a new download, iOS automatically frees up space by deleting any unused stored data. If no more stored data can be deleted, you need to free up space by manually removing downloaded tracks. I’ll show the process for an Apple iPhone, but it’s quite similar for an Android device since the app is basically the same across both platforms. I recommend starting out by changing the iOS settings to block cellular data usage, then going into the Spotify app itself to change a few things therein too. Possibly redundant, but that’s okay!
Spotify let’s you stream music from your your laptop, smartphone and tablet. When streaming over Wi-Fi, you are probably not worried about the bandwidth used by this streaming service. When you have at least 1-2Mbps download speed, you should be fine to stream the music from Spotify’s servers. However, if you are on a mobile internet connection (3G, 4G/LTE), your bandwidth might be capped and it’s important you know how much Spotify actually uses per hour or how long you can play your favourite playlists per GB you have.
Spotify uses three different bitrates: the higher the bitrate you select, the better the quality of the songs. But, the higher the quality, the higher the bandwidth usage will be too. These three bitrates are used by Spotify:
- 96 kbps: this is the default quality for its mobile apps
- 160 kbps: used on the desktop app and on the web player; or used on mobile when you choose ‘high quality’
- 320 kbps: the highest bitrate offered and only offered to Premium members. Available on mobile too as ‘extreme quality’

To decrease data consumption of Spotify, you can choose to set a higher caching limit. Also, working offline (so downloading song when you are on Wi-Fi so they are available when there is not data connection or your are using your mobile connection) can save bandwidth too when you are using the mobile iPhone or Android app.
I have a Spotify Premium account. The price is $10 a month, but it gives you some pretty nice features:
- play any song any time you want. Skip or repeat songs as often as you like.
- no ads, no commercials, no interruptions. Just your music until you stop it.
- simple song discovery and playlist creation. Find a song, add it to a list, then listen. NO SYNCING!
- kiss corporate radio, heavy rotation, and endless Las Vegas concert ads goodbye (!!!)
Those are nice, but the KILLER feature of Spotify’s Premium plan is the Listen Offline function. Streaming music can put a serious dent in your phone data plan if you don’t have an unlimited plan. Here is how you can enjoy Spotify music using no data from your phone data plan:
1. First, connect your phone to a wifi connection. You probably have access at home, work, school, hotels, or hotspots.
2. Next, disable Cellular access to Spotify on your phone. On an iPhone, go to your “Settings / Cellular” page. Scroll down to the Spotify app and disable the slider (set to white, not green):
3. Now when you start the Spotify app on your phone, Spotify will nag you with this pop up warning:
That’s good. That message lets you know that you are only using wifi data with your Spotify app. No more data plan usage!

4. Now, when you have a wifi connection, you can use Spotify as usual and stream whatever music you want. That’s great, but what if a wifi connection isn’t available (like at my gym)? That’s where Spotify’s Listen Offline function comes in. On your phone in your Spotify app, go to the top of a playlist and flip the “Available Offline” switch to green, like this:
The Spotify app will then download all of the songs in that playlist to your phone. Those songs and the playlist will be available for you to listen to any time you want even when you don’t have a cellular or wifi connection. You can do this for any of your playlists. This is pretty handy if you want to have many playlists for different occasions (e.g. running, working out, driving, relaxing, etc.)

For example: my son has an old iPhone 3 with no sim card in it. He uses the Spotify app on his phone via wifi and downloads all of his favorite songs and playlists to it. When we go on trips, he is set with music for hours. When we get to the hotel, he connects back up to wifi, finds more songs, creates more playlists, and does it all again.
Spotify Premium’s Listen Offline function makes music downloading and syncing seamless.
